For protests our children made signs that reflect their understanding of love and antiracism. My 9-year-old believes that black is beautiful, and shouted it loud.
My 4-year-old knows much less than his sister, but understands that some of our friends are being hurt because they do not have the love and protection that they deserve. So his sign reads, above a rainbow: “Zevi loves you”. That made me proud.
For Juneteenth, our conversations are focused on the root of our own practice of antiracism as a family: love and beauty. For children this comes naturally, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have to practice it. Our system does not practice it: so we and our children must.
